Here are the top five stories today in Long Beach:

  1. Were you caught up in Monday’s “road closure on the westbound side of Pacific Coast Highway near Long Beach City College?” Running from Orange Avenue to Walnut Avenue, the LBPD and LB Water suspected the formation of a sinkhole. The closure took place around noon, but by 1:30 p.m. it was still in place. (LB News)
  2. A suspected rapist is off the streets. At around 8:15 a.m., the LBPD learned that a suspected rapist sought in a neighboring city has been spotted “in the LA River area near Long Beach Boulevard and the 710 Freeway.” Officers arrived, took the man in custody, and contacted Bell Gardens PD. (Bell Gardens Police Department)
  3. “If you are going to race, don’t do it in Long Beach,” said Long Beach City Prosecutor, Doug Haubert on Monday. However, if you are going to watch others race, you might want to stay out of the City as well. The City Council has passed an ordinance targeting “any person who is present at a street race, sideshow, or reckless driving exhibition conducted on a public street or highway or in an off-street parking facility with a misdemeanor.” (LB Local News)
  4. The LBFD will once again, for the 20th year, “Brave the Shave.” The Department introduced Caleb, the 2022 AmBOSSador, to set the tone for its effort of “helping fund childhood cancer research one shave at a time.” You are invited to join the event on “Saturday, April 2, 10am-3pm at the Long Beach Firefighters Union Hall located at 2201 Cherry Ave.” (LB Fire Department)
  5. The City announced Friday that it is “one of 21 cities across the nation pledging a 10-year commitment towards implementing policies, practices, and operations to eliminate racial disparities for its residents.” Participation opens the door to creating “equitable strategies to support the closing of income and wealth gaps.” (Patch)
