Here are the top stories in Long Beach today:

  1. Remember when residents said that they thought a warehouse fire at 16325 South Avalon Boulevard had something to do with the Carson stink? It looks like they were right. Officials acknowledged Friday that “a massive September fire at a warehouse which contained wellness and beauty products is likely to blame for the foul odor.” The South Coast Air Quality Management District has issued notices of violation to Virgin Scent, Inc. dba Art Naturals, Day to Day Imports, Inc., Liberty Properties Limited Partnership and its parent company, Prologis, Inc., and Los Angeles County, which operates the Dominguez Channel. (CBS)
  2. Officials said Friday that the shooting threat naming Cabrillo High School was not credible. An online post made the threat, but police were not able to find any evidence that it was real. The LBUSD decided to keep the HS open but added extra safety personnel. (LB Post)
  3. The COVID-19 Omicron variant made it to L.A. County. This fully-vaccinated, adult patient had traveled to South Africa and returned to Los Angeles. On Thursday, officials stated that the infection is “most likely travel-related.” (LB Post)
  4. A scathing report on Thursday likened the operators of the Community Hospital LB to the operators of the Queen Mary. It asserts “too generous contractual terms,” “promised repairs that never happened,” and “poor conditions and management inside.” The operator’s relationship with the city council shows either examples of “collaboration and alignment” or “collusion.” (Beachcomber)
  5. Earlier this week, the Long Beach Creative Group announced an open call for “Painting Long Beach.” “We are asking artists to portray an aspect of Long Beach that is important to them: its world class port; the 169 parks; a population diverse in every way imaginable.” These are just some suggestions. Works of art must be original and cannot be older than five years. Welcome media are “painting, drawing, printmaking, wall-mount sculpture, sculpture, photographs, and mixed media.” You have until January 26 at 10 PM to submit your entry. (Artist Call for Entry)
