Here are the top five stories today in Long Beach:
- On Sunday afternoon, robbery suspects were in the Zaferia neighborhood. SWAT and a large police presence were right around 15th Street and Obispo Avenue. “A vehicle pursuit originating from Torrance ended in a crash,” and two of three suspects fled on foot. Eventually, the PD caught a second suspect “at the 3100 block of East 15th Street.” Officers are now looking for the third suspect. (LB News)
- Some 800 local grocery workers may be going on strike. We learned Sunday that “thousands of grocery workers across Southern California have voted to authorize their union to call a strike amid continued contract negotiations with the owners of stores including Ralphs and Vons/Pavilions/Albertsons.” With the unpleasantness of the 2003 strike still fresh in the minds of consumers and company owners, it is possible that this negotiation will continue as it did in 2019 when a strike vote was taken, but a deal was reached before a walkout occurred. (LB Post)
- 2ND & PCH revealed on Saturday that it is planning a variety of free community events this spring. “The center will host a Pop-up Fire Safety Kids Club on March 30,” have the Musical Youth Artist Repertory (MYART) Troupe perform on April 9, and bring back PCH Movies & Moonlight. The latter starts on “April 1 at sunset, featuring Disney’s Encanto.” (OC Breeze)
- The Salvation Army at Spring Street and Long Beach Boulevard celebrated its first Red Shield Day on Saturday. The event introduced the community to the new Donald & Priscilla Hunt Red Shield Community Center. “Activities included carnival games, a barbecue hosted by the Long Beach Police Department, tours of the facility and a “grudge match” basketball game between member of the Long Beach police and fire departments.” (Press-Telegram)
- The Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach announced Wednesday that King Taco will continue its sponsorship relationship with the event. “Now entering its 28th year of Grand Prix sponsorship, King Taco’s familiar food trucks will be present at various locations around the racetrack, including behind the main grandstands on Shoreline Drive and the central location near ‘Vendor Row’ adjacent to the NTT INDYCAR SERIES paddock.” (GPLB)
