Here are the top five stories in Long Beach today:

  1. On Tuesday morning, a little after 8 a.m., a 2019 Jeep struck a pedestrian in the area of PCH and Rose Avenue. “The pedestrian was crossing northbound in lanes of traffic, outside a crosswalk” and subsequently died from his injuries. The driver remained on the scene; officials said that “distracted driving, impaired driving and speed were not believed to be a factor at the time of the collision.” (LBPD)
  2. JP23 is a nightclub that opened on Pine Avenue and Broadway back in October. We learned Wednesday that the city denied the entertainment venue’s business license application. It did so “following nine misdemeanor citations and two notices of violations since September.” One example is a three-day Super Bowl party without entertainment permit. However, the nightclub disagrees with the finding and has a much different recollection of events. The next stop for this appeal will likely be the City Council. (LB Post)
  3. The Wilson HS aquatics program “announced Monday that alum Zach Polmanteer has been hired as the new boys’ water polo coach to take over for Jeff Nesmith.” Polmanteer graduated in 2013, “won a CIF title as a Bruin in 2011 and attended the University of Redlands.” His coaching credits include “Whittier College, Shore Aquatics, and Junior Olympics.” He has also assisted with the Bruins “for the last four years.” (The562.org)
  4. Mark your calendars! Saturday, at 425 The Promenade North, Loiter Galleries will celebrate its grand opening. In honor of this event, the venue presents "B.Yond the Mask." This is “a dynamic exhibition by local artist, Matthew Beehler.” Festivities run from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. (FB)
  5. On Sunday, consider celebrating at the 14th annual Cambodia Town Parade and Cultural Festival! MacArthur Park is the place to be right around noon; it will feature “live dance performances, Cambodian food vendors and booths from local shops and businesses.” If you want to be part of the parade, be at Anaheim Street and Cherry Avenue at 9 a.m. (Press-Telegram)
