Here are the top five stories today in Long Beach:

  1. On Friday, Garfield Elementary students had a Vehicle Day, “where students were able to see different types of work vehicles and learn more about how they are used.” The LBPD sent Officers Green and White, who had a great time showing students a patrol vehicle. (@LBPD)
  2. On Saturday evening, at around 6 p.m., the LBFD responded to a “residential fire in the 1700 block of East 2nd Street.” Firefighters were able to contain the blaze to the first floor. “A cat was rescued.” (@LBFD)
  3. There was an arrest Friday night in the South Wrigley neighborhood. A 27-year-old man was booked “on suspicion of being a felon in possession of a firearm, carrying a concealed weapon inside a vehicle, possession of a controlled substance while armed, possession of methamphetamine, possession of unlawful paraphernalia, and willful cruelty to a child.” He was initially stopped for “driving without a license plate and impeding traffic.” (LB Post)
  4. On Friday, we learned about the Long Beach Unified High School Healthcare Pathway Simulation Program at Memorial Care LB Medical Center. It is considered a one-of-a-kind program in the country, which allows high school students to work side-by-side with real doctors and nurses in a simulation lab. Started in 2014, it gives students hands-on training and for about 97% of them, it confirms that they want to enter college for health field careers. (LB Local News)
  5. Is Martin Luther King Jr. Park at 1950 Lemon Avenue getting some upgrades? At Tuesday’s City Council meeting, officials “will consider ways it can upgrade the park and whether it can develop a vision plan for MLK Jr. Park, similar to what the panel has done for other parks.” A good example is the MacArthur Park vision plan. Councilwoman Suely Saro likes the idea because “this park offers green space in a dense area.” (Press-Telegram)
