Here are the top stories in Long Beach today:
- Do you know what else stinks about the Dominguez Channel? It’s the way officials are handling the situation. At least that’s what residents were saying Tuesday. The county received 30,000 applications for relief. Of these, a spokesman for the county noted that “more than 4,000 applicants have provided receipts and supporting documentation for reimbursement.” What’s happening to the other 26,000 applicants? - Nextdoor was on fire Tuesday afternoon, with residents commenting about a police presence at the Long Beach Towne Center. What they were witnessing was the end of a police pursuit. It started when a pickup truck ran from police on the 605 Freeway and then drove the wrong way on the 105. From there, the pursuit went through Norwalk and Cerritos before ending at the Towne Center. Officers took three people into custody. (KTLA)
- There was a traffic fatality Tuesday at Pacific Avenue and 12th Street. A 62-year-old female pedestrian died “attempting to cross Pacific Avenue outside of a crosswalk.” A 68-year-old male suspect was arrested “and booked for driving under the influence and carrying a concealed firearm.” If you were a witness to the incident, contact Detectives Shawn Loughlin or Kelsey Myers of the Long Beach Police Department Collision Investigation Detail at (562) 570-7355. - In a Monday press release, the LB Airport warned travelers that the facility expects “that passenger numbers will be five times greater than in 2020.” That equates to 10% fewer than before the pandemic. If you’re one of the travelers, arrive early to make it through security. (City of LB)
- The Long Beach City College is looking for a new superintendent-president. On Tuesday, the search committee announced that it has narrowed down its selection to two candidates: Dr. Michael Muñoz and Dr. Nohemy Ornelas. Now, the Long Beach Community College District Board of Trustees will make the final choice. (LBCC)
