Here are the top five stories in Long Beach today:
- A lack of supply, low interest rates, and consumer demand combine to send Long Beach home prices skyrocketing. Most need to “be prepared to pay $144,000 for the down payment, as well as $3,600 a month for the mortgage.” So, who has the money to buy the homes that do come on the market? We learned Monday that among these buyers are “the creative class moving to the area with their paychecks from Hollywood and high-dollar advertising agencies.” Another group consists of “people, often in the tech industry, with high-paying jobs” who also telecommute. Finally, there are millennials who are moving to LB “because it’s cheaper than the South Bay and LA.” (LB Post)
- Did you recognize her? Sunday’s Super Bowl coin toss was done by none other than LB’s tennis icon and the presidential medal of freedom recipient, Billie Jean King. Her presence at the event was no accident. It signified the “50th anniversary of sports gender equality legislations Title IX.” (People)
- Just in time for Valentine’s Day, LB City Councilwoman Suely Saro (District 6) released the “Forwarding the Sixth” Vision Plan. In it, residents identify street cleanliness and public safety, homelessness, and rent control as well as affordable housing as the most pressing issues. Residents identify the people living there and the sense of community as the two best things about the neighborhood. (@suelysarolb)
- Do you love jaguars (the cars, not the cats)? Sunday, there will be more than 30 of them on display at the Hotel Maya, 700 Queensway Drive. The Jaguar Owners Club, Los Angeles, will host a car show from noon to 3 p.m. on that day. (Press-Telegram)
- Do you remember vinyl records? Third Eye Records at 2234 East 4th Street does. The owners actively buy record collections and resell them. They also work with regular suppliers. This combination results in happy customers, such as the one who called the collection at the store “amazing” and “vinyl gold.” Go visit if you are looking for “the kind of place where people can come and hang out and look at the incredible records.” (Beachcomber)
