Woman Lying on the Street Fatally Struck by Passing Car

Authorities don't know why the woman was lying on the road or if she was dead before the car struck her.

A woman who was lying on a street in Long Beach was fatally struck by a vehicle, police said today.

The 911 call about the accident near the intersection of Loma Avenue and Pacific Coast Highway was received by Long Beach police at 10:46 p.m. Wednesday, Long Beach police Lt. Greg Schirmer said.

“For some reason the woman was laying on the road,” Schirmer said. “A vehicle then hit her. The driver stopped and called police. He didn’t see the woman before he hit her.”

Paramedics pronounced the woman dead at the scene. Her name was withheld pending family notification.

Schirmer said the investigation will determine the woman’s condition when she was struck by the vehicle.

“We don’t know why she was laying in the road or her condition at that point,” Schirmer said. “We don’t yet know if she was alive or dead when she was hit by the vehicle.”

An autopsy is pending to determine the cause of death, he said.
