1 Killed In Fire Near USC: Authorities

A man in his 50s was found dead in an apartment in the building, which is advertised as off-campus student housing.

LOS ANGELES — A man was killed in an apartment fire Tuesday near the University of Southern California, according to authorities.

Firefighters responded just before 2 p.m. to the 2300 block of South Portland Street in the University Park neighborhood and quickly extinguished the blaze on the second floor, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.

While searching the affected unit, firefighters discovered the victim, a man in his 50s, who was determined to be dead at the scene, authorities said.

The three-story building, which is advertised as off-campus student housing, had functioning smoke alarms that prompted evacuation before the department arrived.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, according to the department.
