SOUTH GATE, CA — Two women were shot to death and another woman was wounded in a domestic violence attack early Saturday morning in South Gate, where the suspect also died from an apparent self-inflicted wound, authorities said.

The attack occurred at about 2:30 a.m. Saturday in the 8400 block of San Luis Avenue, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. Sheriff's personnel responded to the scene to assist the South Gate Police Department "regarding an officer-involved shooting," according to the LASD.

Responding officers encountered the suspect leaving through the front door armed with a firearm, and he fired several shots at officers who returned fire, the LASD said. The suspect then re-entered the residence, and additional gunshots were heard as police went inside the residence, sheriff's officials said.

Officers extracted a wounded woman in her 70s from the residence who was taken to a hospital by ambulance with stable vital signs.

The suspect, in his early 50s, was also pronounced dead inside the home of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to the LASD.

A firearm consistent with the one fired at officers was recovered at the scene, authorities said.
Investigators learned the suspect and the three women were related and the shooting appeared to be a case of domestic violence, the LASD said.
