LA VERNE, CA — Amazon is closing four Amazon Fresh stores in the Southland in the coming months, a company spokesperson told Patch.

“Certain locations work better than others, and after an assessment, we’ve decided to close the Amazon Fresh stores in La Habra, La Verne, Mission Viejo, and Whittier,” said Amazon spokesperson Griffin Buch. “We’re working closely with affected employees to help them find new roles within Amazon.”

The closures are expected to occur by mid-November. Despite the decision, which followed a rash of other closures in the U.S. and United Kingdom, the company continues to operate 19 Amazon Fresh stores in Southern California, Buch said.

Customers in the region can still shop online here with Amazon Same-Day Delivery, Amazon Fresh, Whole Foods Market and other grocery partners.

Amazon said the move is part of its regular evaluation process for store locations.

“We regularly evaluate our portfolio of stores and make optimization decisions that can lead to opening, relocating, or closing locations,” Buch added. “We’ll continue to open new stores when we see opportunities to better serve customers.”

The company recently opened two new Amazon Fresh stores in LA County and emphasized that its grocery division is still growing

“In the first half of 2025, Amazon’s everyday essentials—comprising groceries and household essentials—grew nearly twice as fast as all other categories in the U.S.,” Buch said. “We’re continuing to innovate and invest in making shopping for groceries easier, faster, and more affordable both online and across our growing portfolio of more than 600 physical stores under our Whole Foods Market and Amazon brands.”

A previously shuttered Amazon Fresh location in Thousand Oaks is being converted into a Whole Foods Market, according to the Ventura County Star.

According to a recent report from data company ScrapeHero, there were 64 Amazon Fresh stores left in the U.S. as of Sept. 24. California operates the bulk of them, with 27 stores open throughout the state.
