⏰ Daylight Saving Time Poll! 🤔
Daylight saving time begins on March 12. According to history, we can thank entomologist George Hudson for coming up with the idea in 1895. Implementation took place in 1918 to save resources and extend the work day during wartime. In 1966, daylight saving time became the law of the land, but states could opt out. So far, only Hawaii and Arizona have done so. Now, dueling studies point to the successes and failures of the practice. Where do you stand on the issue? So far, 66.1% don’t like daylight saving time, while 33.3% do. Only 0.6% don’t care one way or the other.
📰 Here are the top stories today in Los Angeles:
- The Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) contained a brush fire near 14830 West Pacific Coast Highway on Friday. It started as one-quarter-acre burning uphill. A total of 49 firefighters spent around 50 minutes extinguishing the flames and keeping the damage to almost 1.5 acres. “The cause of the fire is under investigation.” (LAFD)
- An American Airlines Airbus A321 jet collided on Friday with a shuttle bus carrying passengers at LAX. According to the airport authorities, “the jet was being towed from a gate to a parking area” when the collision occurred around 10 p.m. No passengers were on the plane. A few people were injured: the driver of the tow vehicle, the driver of the shuttle and two passengers on the shuttle. (Time)
- Come to Plaza La Alameda at 2140 Florence Avenue! On Friday, a statue honoring Vicente Fernández, the late ranchera and mariachi singer, was unveiled. You may remember that the singer, who died in 2021 at 81, already has a star on The Walk of Fame and a street near the Pico Rivera Sports Arena renamed for him. (Fox)
- Were you caught up in traffic on Saturday? Protestors scheduled a rally for noon at City Hall. The demonstration was to show opposition to Iran’s government. It’s unsure if this is why the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) shut down traffic on Hill, Spring and Broadway between Temple and Los Angeles, 2nd between Figueroa and Los Angeles, and 4th between Beaudry and Los Angeles. (Crisis 24, LAPD)
- The LAPD plans several DUI checkpoints today, Sunday, as part of its "Drive Sober Or Game Over!" campaign. It starts at 3 p.m. in some areas and runs until about 2 a.m. in others. Be prepared to be checked in the areas around Wilshire, Newton, North Hollywood and South L.A. And, please, don’t email me. The LAPD advertises this information to encourage safe partying. (Patch)
