Airline Pulling Out Of CA Sooner Than Planned
The airline cited "lower demand during our final month and issues with airport operations."
BURBANK, CA — Budget airline Avelo is leaving the West Coast about six weeks earlier than previously expected.
After announcing over the summer that its West Coast operations would cease on Dec. 2, the airline decided to change the end date to Oct. 20, Communications Manager Courtney Goff confirmed Wednesday in an email.
Goff cited “lower demand during our final month and issues with airport operations,” and wrote that customers have been emailed about their options as well as refund information.

Avelo’s first operating base was at Hollywood Burbank Airport in 2021, where the airline employed about 150 crew members and started with 11 nonstop routes across the western U.S. At the time, Avelo was the airport’s largest airline employer.
Avelo now has a single plane in its Burbank fleet and is refocusing on the East Coast, with California-based employees having the option to transfer, according to KTLA. The airline generated controversy earlier this year after partnering with the U.S. Department of Immigration and Customs Enforcement on deportation-related charter flights, KTLA reported, noting that Avelo insisted its choice to leave the West Coast was not related.

As Avelo is pulling out, Breeze Airways, another budget airline, is set to arrive in Burbank. Breeze announced in July that it is launching air service in five West Coast cities, including Burbank, in March 2026, with flights available to Eureka; Eugene, Oregon; Bend, Oregon; Pasco, Washington; and Salt Lake City, Utah.
