LOS ANGELES — Zoox, Amazon’s robotaxi, is coming to Los Angeles, the company announced earlier this month.

Zoox will start with testing operations in the area, deploying a small number of test fleet vehicles with safety drivers. The test fleet will conduct manual mapping. Zoox will then begin autonomous driving in the summer.

Los Angeles is Zoox’s sixth testing market. The company is preparing to welcome its first riders in San Francisco and Las Vegas later in the year. Other test markets include Seattle, Austin and Miami.

Amazon describes the Zoox robotaxis as “purpose-built for rider experiences, with no steering wheel or traditional driving controls.” Its interior has cupholders, a wireless charging pad and other amenities.

The Amazon subsidiary was founded in 2014 and is headquartered in Foster City.

Zoox is not Los Angeles's first robotaxi. Last year, Alphabet Inc.'s Waymo was made fully available to Angelenos through its Waymo One app.
