Animal Rescue Based in Egypt Seeks Emergency Community Support
"Poor Egyptian Cats and Dogs" is a charity and rescue based in Egypt, led by Mervat Said. Urgent support is needed for their animals.
Mervat Said is an Egyptian based rescuer in Giza, who has been rescuing animals for over 17 years, and under her United Kingdom and Egypt based, registered rescue “Poor Egyptian Cats and Dogs” for the past 12 years. Said and her support staff care for 250 dogs, 50 horses and donkeys, and 4 sheep and runs three separate sanctuaries which provide shelter for them. Ms. Said has dedicated her life to rescuing animals, and many times providing crucial, emergency medical support to stop the cruelty that many of her animals have faced, prior to Said’s intervention. Said recently rescued a dog who has a broken spine, but states Ms. Said, “his spinal cord is not affected and there is a very hopeful chance that this dog will be able to walk again with proper medical care; medical care which he has started receiving and needs additional financial support to make sure that all of his needs are met so that he can heal, and walk again.”
“Food expense at the sanctuary exceeds $200 per day to keep the animals well fed,” states Ms. Said. We also have ongoing needs for the animals who take medicine daily.”
A ‘Go Fund Me’ fundraising campaign has been launched for this dog who needs crucial, life saving medical care. Supporters of animal rescue who want to help this dog to give him the fighting chance that he deserves, can donate via the rescue’s Go Fund me, launched by Christy Hughes on behalf of the rescue Dog Hit by a Car Needs Emergency Funds for Medical. An update posted by Ms. Said on her Facebook page states that this dog has now been moved to the hospital, where he is under medical care, stating, “he has had all of the examinations and blood tests needed for a proper diagnosis. This has shown that he has a broken spine, yet there is hope. There is hope for him to walk again with proper support and care.” Ms. Said continued to state, “The veterinarian said that the spinal cord is still not damaged, so there is definitely hope that our injured, but very hopeful dog who perseveres, can walk again with proper care. He must stay at the veterinary hospital for at least an anticipated three months for physiotherapy and other treatments, to get the good results required for a healthy life ahead of him.” Ms. Said states, “Due to the number of the animals that my rescue helps, I can hardly make ends meet each day for food for all of the animals, rent for the housing for the animals, and for the salaries for the people that I have brought on to help care for the daily needs of our charity’s 300 animals, representing the three sanctuaries.” Stating to the public, “Please help me keep this dog at the hospital, as they charge 25 dollars per day at the hospital in Egypt, where he must stay for the extended period of time due to the nature of this critical condition.” Mervat Said asks that those who know that all animals deserve empathy, compassion, unwavering love and the best care available to heal from injuries to “please help with anything you can, so that we can save his life, and so that he can walk again. No amount is too small and even a literal dollar or two can do something to help.”Those who know the immense importance of helping beautiful animals in need of our support, can also donate via Paypal at PoorEgyptianCats2@gmail.com.

Prior to the pandemic onset in 2020, Mervat Said through her charity, Poor Egyptian Cats and Dogs had placed many animals from Egypt into loving homes in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and throughout other countries in Europe. She “hopes to be able to do this again at some point, “ when pandemic restrictions completely lift.

Mervat Said states, “The dog who is healing from the broken spine, the way he looks at us always expresses how grateful he is. With one look he has expressed his gratitude, each and every day since the day that we rescued him after he was hit by the car. These precious moments are priceless, and mean everything!! Concluding, “He had almost lost hope and was about to give up when we appeared, but thankfully he did not.”
Poor Egyptian Cats and Dogs, a charity with three separate sanctuaries is home to many previously abandoned, abused or neglected cats, and also as aforementioned, they provide a home to ponies, horses, donkeys and sheep who were also previously abandoned, neglected or abused before Ms. Said had intervened. Concluding my interview with Ms. Mervat Said, I asked her to please tell me what the support via donations for her animals means to her and her animals, she stated, “It means a lot to me and all of the animals. Without donations, my charity will collapse. The public support for the past ten years has meant everything, without donations my animals would starve.” Prior to the last ten years, Mervat Said states,
“Back then I was able to support the animals through my income,” and now with the immense number of animals cared for by her three sanctuaries, public support is essential, needed and immensely appreciated.
