Burbank Man Found Guilty Of Embezzling Millions Elderly Man Had Inherited

The defendant now faces a maximum sentence of 210 years in prison for his actions, according to authorities.

BURBANK, CA — A Burbank man has been found guilty of embezzling millions from an elderly man's inheritance, according to federal prosecutors.

Jamal Nathan Dawood, 54, also known as “Jimmy Dawood,” was found guilty of six counts of wire fraud and nine counts of money laundering following a seven-day trial, according to the United States Attorney's Office, Central California.

Federal prosecutors say the elderly man inherited retirement savings and real estate properties from a dead brother, and that Dawood, in 2019, offered to help him open a trust account to manage the funds.

Instead, Dawood sent wire transfers and online payments to his own accounts without the elderly man's knowledge, according to authorities. Dawood then convinced the elderly man to transfer ownership of his home and his late brother's real estate holding to several companies.

"Dawood falsely represented that the victim would retain an ownership interest in his residence and the inherited real estate through these companies," according to the United States Attorney's Office. "In fact, Dawood and other individuals close to him controlled these companies."

Through the scheme, Dawood stole about $2.2 million in money and property from the elderly man, according to federal prosecutors.

Dawood is now facing a maximum of 210 years in prison for his actions, according to authorities.

Federal authorities ask that anyone who knows of a person 60 years or older who has been the victim of financial fraud to contact the National Elder Fraud Hotline at 1-833-372-8311.
