PASADENA, CA — Without community leaders, Pasadena wouldn’t hum along nearly as smoothly as it does. We’d miss their contributions in big and small ways.

Patch has partnered with T-Mobile to recognize these often unsung community leaders and celebrate their contributions.

This submission comes from Liz Jackman, a Pasadena reader who nominated Cindy Bengston.

How do you know this community leader?

I first met Cindy through Leadership Pasadena (LP). LP is a leadership development program that I was participating in, and Cindy was the incredible Executive Director. In that position, she demonstrated a tireless commitment to fostering inclusive, progressive leaders in the Pasadena community. I later invited Cindy to join the Caltech Y board. Luckily, she said yes, and a year later she became the board chair! I believe this is a testament to her exceptional leadership skills and ability to inspire and motivate others.

What does this community leader do?

At age 25 she created Big Sisters of Los Angeles. 41 years later, Big Sisters is merged as Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Los Angeles serving 1000 “high risk” children throughout LA County. Her other non-profit work has included memberships and Board roles in over 15 organizations, most recently Leadership Pasadena and Los Altos Auxiliary for Hathaway Sycamores. She is the current board chair for the Caltech Y.

Cindy is retired after 30 years of leadership positions with ARCO/BP and devotes her time to community service. She is a powerhouse and gets things done in her community. Cindy's ability to connect people and ideas is truly remarkable. If you reach out to her with a question or concern, she will not only provide you with an answer but also connect you with a vast network of resources within minutes. It's this level of dedication and drive that makes Cindy such an incredible doer and connector.

Cindy is an extraordinary force in her community, relentlessly working to support and connect those around her. Her commitment to serving others is unparalleled, and her boundless energy is contagious. I wish there were more people like Cindy. She is truly amazing.
