⏰ Daylight Saving Time Poll! 🤔
Daylight saving time begins on March 12. According to history, we can thank entomologist George Hudson for coming up with the idea in 1895. Implementation took place in 1918 to save resources and extend the work day during wartime. In 1966, daylight saving time became the law of the land, but states could opt out. So far, only Hawaii and Arizona have done so. Now, there are dueling studies pointing to the successes and failures of the practice. Where do you stand on the issue? So far, 64.5% don’t like daylight saving time, while 35.5% do.
📰 Here are the top stories today in Los Angeles:
- Clark Street Bread in the Grand Central Market on Broadway is calling it quits. The stall closes February 15. “We only have so many resources, and we’ve decided to focus them on our other locations,” the owner said. These locations include Lily’s Bar in Franklin Village and the Clark Street Diner on Franklin Avenue. (Clark Street Bread)
- Later today, Saturday, is the memorial for mountain lion P-22 at the Greek Theatre. Fans of the big cat snapped up free tickets as soon as they became available. If you wanted to go but couldn’t get one, all is not lost! Be a part of the event that will be livestreamed. Several library locations are hosting watch parties. (Patch)
- Vernon’s Farmer John meatpacking plant is closing this month. Almost 2,000 workers already lost their jobs Thursday. Parent company Smithfield Foods cites “high costs” as the reason for shutting down the plant. Supermarket customers will continue to see Farmer John products — they’ll be trucked in from the Midwestern meatpacking plants. (ABC)
- L.A.’s Korean American community scored a win on Thursday. Negotiations between the South Korean government and local conservancy organizations led to the protection of the Young Korean Academy (Hung Sa Dahn) at 3421 South Catalina Street. The Republic of Korea bought the property, which also represents the first time that it bought real estate in the United States. The deal went through “to prevent the demolition of the building and preserve it as a historic memorial site for the Korean independence movement.” (L.A. Conservancy)
- Los Angeles Councilman Curren Price Jr. reaffirmed his support of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church on Friday. Calling it “the keeper of faith for centuries and a symbol of African spirituality and independence,” he acknowledged political turmoil in Ethiopia that is affecting the congregations. If you didn’t know, the St. Mary's Ethiopian Orthodox Tewhado Church is at 5505 West Slauson Avenue. (Curren Price Jr.)
