Emergency Repairs Snarl LA Freeway Traffic After Woman Injured By 'Baseball-Sized' Concrete Chunk

The woman was hospitalized after being hit by a large chunk of concrete on the freeway.

LOS ANGELES, CA — Traffic was slowed for several hours after a large crack appeared on the 101 Freeway Thursday morning.

The crack was located on the surface of the No. 3 lane of the northbound 101 just north of Western Avenue in Hollywood, according to a Sigalert.

Caltrans crews were working to make emergency repairs to the freeway Thursday morning. Two northbound lanes were shut down and expected to remain closed for several hours, according to the California Highway Patrol. All lanes were reopened by 1:20 p.m.

The crack came to the attention of authorities after a car was struck by a chunk of concrete Thursday morning.

A woman reported that a baseball-sized piece of concrete came through a side window of the vehicle she was traveling in and cut her ear, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.

The woman was transported to a local hospital for treatment of the 4-inch-long wound, authorities said.

It was not immediately clear if the concrete chunk came from the crack, or if the crack was a result of the wreck. It was identified by first responders as they arrived on scene.
