📰 Here are the top stories in Los Angeles today:
1) A man in his 60s was found dead on Wednesday evening in a U-Haul rental truck, “near the intersection of West Carlos and North Bronson avenues.” He was shot to death and may have been homeless. (Fox)
2) On Wednesday, the federal grand jury indicted three men from Long Beach in the March 23rd Beverly Hills jewelry store smash-and-grab robbery. The suspects range in age from 20 to 37. They are believed to have stolen “more than $2.6 million worth of merchandise.” (ABC)
3) What’s happening with the Echo Park Lake lotus? We learned on Wednesday that for this year’s Lotus Festival, there was very little in the way of lotus plants in the lake. “Initially planted in the 1920s and restored nearly a decade ago, the lotus bed has steadily shrunk in recent years.” The lotus falls under the care of “LA Sanitation & Environment,” which “declined to comment.” (The Eastsider LA)
4) The Los Angeles Fire Department graduated its LAFD Recruit Training Academy Class 22-1 on Thursday morning. Congratulations! (L.A. Fire Department)
5) The Latin Jazz & Music Festival is planned for Saturday from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. It will take place in MacArthur Park and is the ninth return of the event. The event is FREE, and there is “free parking on Wilshire Boulevard between Alvarado Street and South Park View Avenue.” (The Eastsider LA)
Patch deal of the day:
Wine lover alert. We found this amazing deal from Splash Wines — an 18-bottle curated selection of reds and whites for fall — for just $69.99. Shipping isn't cheap at $39.95, but that still comes out to just over $6 per bottle. Splash Wines has a money-back guarantee if you don't like the wine and 4.6 out of 5 rating on TrustPilot. So: recommended.
