📰 Here are the top stories today in Los Angeles:
- On Monday afternoon, a grisly discovery led to the recovery of human remains at the Port of L.A. At this time, we have no word on the individual’s identity. “Officials said the investigation into the discovery and cause of death is still ongoing.” (Patch)
- Café Gratitude at 300 South Santa Fe Avenue closed its doors. After eight years in the Arts District, the vegan eatery called it quits on Sunday. You may have heard that the company also closed its San Diego eatery. “It has been an incredible eight years, and we want to express our heartfelt gratitude to the DTLA community that has supported us, and the dedicated team members who joined in our mission to create a healthier, more vibrant world through the simple pleasures of plant-based nutrition,” the company said. (L.A. Eater)
- Combine strong winds, lots of rain and eucalyptus trees, and you know what happens next. Tuesday’s news roundup shows that a large specimen fell on power lines and then shut down 12660 Montana Avenue in Brentwood. Near Burnside Avenue and Pico Boulevard, a tree fell and landed on a car. At Ivanhoe Elementary School (2828 Herkimer Street), a 40-foot tree fell on two classrooms; nobody was hurt, and the administration used the library to make up for the missing space. (KTLA, The Eastsider LA)
- Tuesday morning also spelled trouble for commuters around 13150 West Mulholland Drive. Mud and debris flow damaged a utility pole, threatened homes, and made a huge mess. One homeowner is dealing with a failing retaining wall. Authorities closed Mulholland Drive between Deep Canyon Drive and Coldwater Canyon Drive. "Motorists, expect congestion and delay, avoid the immediate area and consider an alternate route," the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) warned. (Patch)
- On February 16, skateboard oasis Supreme opened at 8801 Sunset Boulevard. You're missing out if you haven’t been to the store yet. Now taking up the space where Tower Records used to be, the 8,500-square-foot locale features a “fully floating skate bowl.” Sure, having an indoor skate bowl isn’t anything new, but this one’s big! “The clover-leafed sculpted wooden skate bowl has three depths and a pale surface bordered by a darker rim.” Word has it: it’s challenging. (Dezeen)
