Daylight Saving Time Poll! 🤔
Daylight saving time begins on March 12. According to history, we can thank entomologist George Hudson for coming up with the idea in 1895. Implementation took place in 1918 to save resources and extend the work day during wartime. In 1966, daylight saving time became the law of the land, but states could opt out. So far, only Hawaii and Arizona have done so. Now, there are dueling studies pointing to the successes and failures of the practice. Where do you stand on the issue? So far, 63.4% don’t like daylight saving time, while 36.6% do.

Here are the top stories today in Los Angeles:

  1. Unless you’ve been on a complete media fast, you’ve undoubtedly heard of the 24-year-old man who might have planned a mass shooting. Someone dropped a dime and called in a complaint about a person making threats. The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) responded, checked his 18th-floor residence at the Lumina Hollywood at 1522 Gordon Street, and found “several high-powered rifles, shotguns, handguns and a ‘large cache of various munitions.’” Looking out the windows, police saw a clear line of sight to a public park. Moreover, “some of the rifles were pointed outside of the windows.” (KTLA)
  2. Councilman Hugo Soto-Martinez says he heard you! And the chain-link fence around Echo Park Lake is coming down. You may remember that it was put up in March 2021 after a large tent encampment was removed. However, he wouldn’t say on Thursday precisely when the fence is coming down. Some residents aren’t sure that removing the fence is a good idea, because it may signal the availability of the space for another encampment. (The Eastsider LA)
  3. Plenty of travelers were inconvenienced when LAX lost power Wednesday afternoon. While flights remained on schedule, some passengers “did have to deplane manually after jet bridges lost power.” Other people ended up trapped in elevators, and first responders were called. Various businesses on Century Boulevard were said to also lose power. At this point, the Department of Water and Power hasn’t released the cause of the outage. (Patch)
  4. The Los Angeles City Council voted earlier this week to negotiate exclusively with Hudson Pacific Properties on a development plan for Marlton Square. The parcel is a 5.7-acre site “near the K Line and the Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Plaza mall in South L.A.” The proposal included space for an urban farm, a food incubator, a grocery store and office space. (LA Urbanize)
  5. Check out the “Designing with Disaster: Stories from Seven Regenerative Cities” exhibit that opened late last month at the Japan House. It’s an innovative look at the “possibility of symbioses between humans and the natural and constructed worlds.” If you’re a multi-medium aficionado, you’ll love the animations, plans and projected data. If you haven’t been yet, you have until April 2 to check it out. (Japan House L.A.)
