'Extraordinary Amount' Of Illegal Fireworks Seized In South Bay

Authorities seized over 120,000 pounds of illegal fireworks, according to CalFire.

GARDENA, CA — One of the biggest illegal fireworks seizures in the state occurred in recent days in the South Bay, authorities announced Tuesday.

The Office of the State Fire Marshal Arson and Bomb Unit and Gardena police worked together to make several arrests early Saturday morning and seize over 120,000 pounds of illegal fireworks, according to CalFire.

Among the “extraordinary amount” of illegal fireworks were fireworks up to 8 inches in diameter, more than 2,000 illegal destructive devices and 10 pounds of bulk homemade explosives, according to the agency.

“CAL FIRE would like to remind everyone that it is illegal to sell, transport, or use fireworks that do not carry the ‘Safe and Sane’ seal, as well as possess or use fireworks in a community where they are not permitted,” the agency said in a news release. “If convicted, a violator could be fined up to $50,000, as well as be sent to jail for up to one year.”
