📰 Here are the top stories today in Los Angeles:

  1. On Friday evening, the Hollywood Burbank Airport cleared SkyWest flight E175 for takeoff from runway 33. Concurrently, it cleared Mesa Airlines flight 5826 for a landing on the same runway. The pilot had the wherewithal to initiate a go-around maneuver that prevented a crash. Now, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) want to know how this could happen. (Fox)
  2. The Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) conducted several successful swift water rescues. On Friday evening near 15700 West Burbank Boulevard, a helicopter connected with three men and a woman experiencing homelessness, as well as four dogs and a cat. They were stranded “in a remote area of land within the heavily flooded Sepulveda Flood Control Basin.” Using a helicopter, the LAFD rescued everyone and brought them to the Van Nuys Airport. Two adults were hospitalized for hypothermia. The other two took care of the animals and left. (LAFD)
  3. If you’re a Southern California Edison (SCE) customer, you may be in one of the 48 outages reported on Saturday. Some 12,000 L.A. County customers were affected. Cool your heels if you’re a Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) customer. The agency said that initial responses to outages may take 12 to 24 hours; then, the clock starts ticking for the outage to be fixed. Some North Hollywood, Valley Village, Studio City, Los Feliz and Toluca Lake customers are still sitting in the dark. As of 10 a.m. on Saturday, the LADWP restored power to 52,000 customers but still had 66,500 more waiting. (NBC, LADWP)
  4. How are our neighbors experiencing homelessness doing in the cold, wet weather? We learned on Saturday that a 50-year-old man wrapped himself in foil and sat outside the Fred Jordan Mission. A 45-year-old man built a fire in a grocery cart he put under a tarp on skid row. A 39-year-old man built a cooking fire on the ground and called the storm a “bearable inconvenience.” An 85-year-old man was among a group of men “curled up in blankets at the entrance of the Metro Red Line.” A group of women huddled around Union Station. (L.A. Times)
  5. An electrical fire wiped out A Family Affair Southern Cuisine Restaurant at 5575 West Manchester Avenue last week. In business just about a year, the eatery had become a well-known Westchester institution. The owners said their plan now is to rely on “prayer, community support and a GoFundMe page.” (ABC)

  • "Congrats to our newest FFPMs! Four LACoFD firefighters officially graduated from the Paramedic Training Institute (PTI) on 2.23.23. The formal graduation ceremony was held at El Camino Community College in Torrance." (Los Angeles County Fire Dept. via Instagram)

  • "Join us and learn about the dangers of substance use, including fentanyl, and how to have conversations with your child and other parents to support wellness. The webinar will be on Monday, 2/27 at 5:30pm." (Los Angeles Unified via Instagram)
  • "71 Years Ago in LA Rain. While we typically applaud bystander action, time has shown that many civilians who attempt a swift water rescue become additional victims - often perishing in the attempt. If you see someone in peril in swift moving water: Remain calm! Call 911 quickly! Answer the dispatcher's questions!" (Los Angeles Fire Department via Facebook)
