Huge Gas Leak Forces Evacuations In Whittier

Southern California Gas reps are at the scene and working with the Los Angeles County Fire Department to determine the cause.

WHITTIER, CA — An early-morning natural gas leak forced the evacuation of approximately 75 people from over 30 homes Thursday in an unincorporated area of Whittier.

The leak was reported at around 1:30 a.m. and residents in the 7500 block of Vicki Drive and Coolhurst Drive were evacuated to nearby Phelan Language Academy at 7150 Cully Ave., KABC 7 reported.

Representatives from Southern California Gas are at the scene and are working with the Los Angeles County Fire Department to determine the cause of the leak.

Evacuated residents were temporarily relocated to a safe shelter at Phelan Language Academy, 7150 Culley Ave., the sheriff's Pico Rivera station reported. No injuries have been reported.

The station added that residents can contact them at 562-949-2421 for resources and other information related to the evacuation.
