😋 Fair Food Poll!
Fair food is the ultimate cheat meal. Although we all know it’s unhealthy, everyone has a guilty pleasure. Which is your favorite? So far, 36.7% love funnel cake, and 20% look forward to candy apples. 10% each reach for guacamole or corndogs, while 6.7% each order cheesecake or tri-tip sandwiches. 3.3% each favor fried cheese curds, guacamole with cheese, or cotton candy.

📰 Here are the top stories in Los Angeles today:

  1. On Thursday afternoon, the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) responded to the Van Nuys Airport, where a small plane overturned. It did so near a runway in a safety area. The pilot, a 28-year-old woman, was the only person on board. First responders took her to a local hospital with “minor injuries.” (LAFD)
  2. Los Angeles sidewalks are in notoriously bad shape, having caused the inimitable Doug McIntyre to once opine that you need the assistance of a Sherpa to navigate them. On Thursday morning, volunteers with University Park Slow Jams tried a different approach and placed huge band-aid stickers on cracked, buckling and otherwise damaged sidewalks in front of Norwood Street Elementary School. You can help by reporting the damaged sidewalks, scanning the stickers’ QR codes. Organizers hope “that a spike in service requests will get the city to speed up the glacial pace of sidewalk repair.” (LA Streetsblog)
  3. Calling out restaurants publicly for bad behavior should include a full address. Juanita’s Cafe at 20 Olvera Street experienced this the hard way when it drew the ire of Edin Alex Enamorado’s followers. While supporting a street vendor who was reportedly assaulted by “someone affiliated with a nearby brick-and-mortar business . . . named Juanita’s Cafe Mexican Restaurant” downtown, people mistakenly believed it was the Olvera Street eatery, which led to “threats and 1-star Yelp reviews.” (L.A. Taco)
  4. The weather doesn’t play nice, even for Donatella Versace and her Fall 2023 collection. But if anyone knows how to take challenges in a stride, it’s a designer. The fashion show was held a day early, on Thursday on the top deck of Hollywood’s Pacific Design Center parking garage. Star power was on hand, and the fashions were delightfully elegant. (Fashionista)
  5. Two more L.A. restaurants were added to the Michelin Guide. While we learned the names on Friday, we don’t know exactly how they will be added. One is Leona’s Sushi House at 11814 Ventura Boulevard. Open for just a short three months or so, the food was called “irreverent.” The other eatery is Niku X at 900 Wilshire Boulevard, where wagyu earned accolades for “classic Yakiniku-style cooking with contemporary techniques.” (LA Eater)
