LOS ANGELES, CA — Gas prices in Los Angeles dropped lower than they've been since May 27 after weeks of steady decrease, but the county's prices still remain higher than much of the country.

On Wednesday, the average price for a gallon of regular gas in Los Angeles County was $6.096, down by nearly 17 cents in just a week, according to AAA. Wednesday was the 29th consecutive day of price decreases after an 18-day streak of increases.

The average national price for a gallon of gas was $4.63 on Wednesday, well under California's average of $6.02. California had the third biggest price drop since last week, topped only by Arizona and Texas.

The price drops are especially shocking given increased demand for the 4th of July holiday, AAA spokesperson Andrew Gross said in a news release.

"Usually, more people buying gas would lead to higher pump prices,” Gross said. “But the price for oil, the main ingredient in gasoline, has fallen and is hovering around $100 a barrel. Less expensive oil usually means less expensive gas.”

Relief at the gas pump could be a promising sign for stubborn inflation numbers. Inflation was higher Wednesday than it has been since 1981, but gas prices were among the largest inflation drivers in June, Forbes reported.
