``We are heartbroken by the tragic loss of one of our own, who was taken from us far too soon," Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert G. Luna said. ``Our deputy dedicated his life to the service and safety of others, both in and out of uniform. His commitment to public safety was not just a job -- it was who he was.

``Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, and all who knew him."

A sheriff's department official told ABC7 the department was reviewing the deputy's work schedule and background to determine if he was possibly leaving or driving to work.

The deputy's name was not released. According to ABC7, he joined the department last May and was assigned to North County Correctional Facility.

CHP officers temporarily diverted traffic as emergency crews assisted with clearing the scene and ensuring the safety of all victims.

The cause of the collision remained under investigation Monday evening.

``We are deeply saddened by the loss of this deputy, our thoughts are with his family, friends and the entire Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department during this incredibly difficult time. We honor his service and commitment to our community," CHP Capt. E. A. Krusey said in a statement.
