LAX Near-Miss Between Delta And College Team's Plane Investigated

LOS ANGELES, CA — A near-miss between a commercial passenger plane and a charter plane carrying a college basketball team at LAX triggered an ongoing federal investigation.

Federal aviation authorities are looking into the incident that occurred Friday at about 4:30 p.m. when a charter plane carrying the Gonzaga University men's basketball team landed at LAX for Saturday's game against UCLA.

Upon the charter plane's landing, air traffic controllers directed the plane to halt as it nearly encroached upon the runway where a Delta Air Lines plane was departing, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

However, the charter plane operated by Key Lime Air rolled forward beyond the point where it was directed to hold, prompting an air traffic controller to repeatedly shout "stop" to the pilot, according to video and audio that was posted online by Airline Videos Live.

The plane did come to a stop without encroaching on the runway, and the Delta flight took off without incident, according to the FAA.

“We understand that the incident at LAX is under investigation and we will review this information as it becomes available,” Gonzaga said in a statement obtained by the New York Times. “Our team members aboard the aircraft were unaware of the situation as it occurred and we are grateful that the incident ended safely for all.”
