😋 Fair Food Poll!
Fair food is the ultimate cheat meal. Although we all know it’s unhealthy, everyone has a guilty pleasure. Which is your favorite? So far, 34.3% love funnel cake, 20% look forward to candy apples, 11.5% munch on corndogs, and 8.6% reach for guacamole. 5.7% each either eat cotton candy, tri-tip sandwiches, or cheesecake. Finally, 2.9% each favor guacamole with cheese, fried cheese curds, or pork chop on a stick.

📰 Here are the top stories today in Los Angeles:

  1. On Friday, the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) responded to a railroad car fire at 920 East Pacific Coast Highway. A locomotive measuring about 100 feet in length was “fully involved.” It took the 18 firefighters 75 minutes to put out the flames and prevent them from spreading to nearby commercial buildings. The locomotive was “boarded up in a freight railway yard,” and the cause of the fire is under investigation. (LAFD)
  2. Also on Friday, right around 2:30 p.m., the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department responded to the 16900 block of Wing Lane after a caller reported shots fired at passersby. Upon arrival, the suspect promptly fired at the deputies and then retreated into a home when they fired back. Fast-forward to Saturday, and the standoff went past the 23-hour mark. Residents in nearby homes had to be evacuated to the Workman High School on Temple Avenue, and crisis negotiators continued to be on the scene. (ABC)
  3. LAUSD labor update: Earlier, we talked about the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) and the possibility of a labor dispute with “cafeteria workers, bus drivers, custodians, special education assistants and other workers.” On Saturday, we learned that the Los Angeles teachers union announced its intention to join the workers who might go on a three-day strike within the next 14 days. “If Local 99 of the Service Employees International Union does not reach an agreement with the district, teachers would stay home or picket alongside them.” If workers of both unions walk out together, working parents will most likely have to make childcare arrangements. (Patch, Finnoexpert)
  4. The Dunamis House in Boyle Heights opened last week. Run by Los Angeles Room & Board (LARNB), it provides 100 beds for currently enrolled students of L.A. County colleges or trade schools. Mayor Karen Bass was on hand to celebrate the ribbon cutting. One group of students who will benefit are homeless community college learners. The next property to open will be the Excelsior House in East Hollywood. (USC Annenberg Media, LARNB)
  5. It’s almost time for the 38th Annual Los Angeles Marathon! Scheduled for March 19 between 4 a.m. and 2 p.m., it creates street closures along the “26.2-mile Stadium to the Stars course.” Runners meet at Dodger Stadium and finish at Century Park. Closures will affect Sunset Boulevard, North San Vicente Boulevard, Santa Monica Boulevard and North Crescent Heights Boulevard. (WEHO Times)
