Man Shot By Police On LA Freeway Was Wanted For Child Abduction: LAPD

The man was shot by police at the end of a chase, but no weapons were found in the search after the officer-involved shooting.

LOS ANGELES, CA — A man shot by police on a busy Los Angeles County freeway this week was wanted on suspicion of child abduction, the Los Angeles Police department announced Friday.

Authorities identified the man wounded by gunfire as 36-year-old Osmin Brisen.

Brisen was shot repeatedly at the end of a police chase Wednesday afternoon on the east 105 Freeway on-ramp at Central Avenue.

Briseno was rushed to a local hospital and treated for gunshot wounds. Though still hospitalized, he was booked for an unrelated assault with a deadly weapon with a firearm, according to the LAPD. Investigators did not release any additional information about the alleged assault or suspected abduction.

The pursuit began around 2 p.m. Wednesday near the area of West 113th Street and Compton Avenue when officers saw a known suspect wanted for child abduction, according to a statement issued by the LAPD Friday.

"The suspect, 36-year-old Osmin Briseno, was known to carry firearms. Officers attempted a traffic stop on Briseno’s vehicle, however; he suddenly fled at a high rate of speed. A short vehicle pursuit ensued, terminating on the east 105 Freeway on-ramp at Central Avenue," the LAPD said in a wirtten statement.

"Briseno exited his vehicle holding a backpack. The officers repeatedly commanded Briseno not to reach inside the backpack, which he ignored. Briseno led officers on a foot pursuit, running west toward Central Avenue," the LAPD announced. "As he reached Central Avenue, Briseno suddenly stopped, faced a pursuing officer, and reached inside the backpack, resulting in an officer-involved shooting."

After the shooting, police searched the area but could find no weapons at the scene belonging to Brisen.

No officers were injured in the shooting.
