Mattel Plans To Build 5 Indoor Waterparks

The maker of Barbie, Hot Wheels, Fisher-Price and American Girl is getting into the water park business.

EL SEGUNDO, CA — El Segundo-based toymaker Mattel announced Tuesday plans to develop five indoor waterparks incorporating the company's best-known brands, which include Barbie, Hot Wheels, Fisher-Price and American Girl.

The first Mattel Wonder Indoor Waterpark is expected to be located in Orlando, Florida. The locations of four other anticipated parks were not immediately released.

"Mattel Wonder Indoor Waterparks will encompass many iconic Mattel brands that span generations of play, offering innovative water-based attractions and amenities in a dynamic new format for Mattel," Julie Freeland, Mattel's vice president of Global Location Based Entertainment, said in a statement. "We are thrilled to collaborate with these exceptional industry leaders in waterpark development to create an experience where guests can connect with their favorite brands in an entirely new way."

According to the company, each park will integrate Mattel's toy brands in attractions that will include lazy rivers, wave pools and waterslides.

The parks will be developed with design firm Martin Aquatic and managed by American Resort Management.

"Blending our innovative experiential design with Mattel's family of brands is a dream come true," Martin Aquatic President/Creative Director Josh Martin said in a statement. "We look forward to inspiring that same sense of wonder for kids and adults alike as they cross the threshold into each Mattel Wonder Indoor Waterpark."

A target date for the opening of the first park was not released.
