PIRU, CA — The Canyon Fire broke out Thursday afternoon on the Ventura-Los Angeles county line Thursday afternoon, prompting several evacuation orders in areas near the 5 Freeway.

The Canyon Fire was estimated at about 50 acres and burning in the direction of ranch homes as of 2:30 p.m. Thursday. The fire grew to about 5,000 acres within hours, according to authorities.

The fire, located in a mountainous area southeast of Lake Piru, broke out amid temperatures nearing 100 degrees and humidity as low as 15%, according to the National Weather Service.

"The fire is burning east with a rapid rate of spread in light to medium fuels. The onshore push is influencing fire behavior and the fire is threatening 60kv powerlines as well as the communities of Halsley Canyon and Hatthaway Ranch but is moving away from the community of Piru," Cal Fire wrote.

Evacuation orders have been issued in Ventura County for zones around Lake Piru and in Los Angeles County west of Castaic and the 5 Freeway in communities including Val Verde.
