LOS ANGELES, CA — The surf, skate and snowboarding brand shops that styled the California look for a generation are shuttering with the bankruptcy of the Orange County-based Liberated Brands, the company announced.

Quiksilver, Billabong and Volcom are closing all 124 stores across the United States, including 35 in California. The shutdown affects roughly 1,400 employees, according to bankruptcy filings.

“The Liberated team has worked tirelessly over the last year to propel these iconic brands forward, but a volatile global economy, consumer spending changes amid a rising cost of living and inflationary pressures have all taken a heavy toll," the company announced in a written statement this week.

Volcom opened its first store in Los Angeles at the start of the millennium. The company underwent a boom period during the pandemic when there was a sudden uptick in surf, beach and activewear. The company's number of retail stores more than doubled to 140 stores, Fortune reported.

But the company began to take on debt and blamed the post-pandemic supply chain struggles, spiking interest rates and the rise in fast-fashion for a dramatic drop-off in revenue over the last two years.

The company listed debt of $226 million in its bankruptcy filings, Fortune reported.

Brands such as Billabong and Quicksilver will still be available for purchase as the licenses are sold to another company.
