Prescribed Burn Set For East SGV To Reduce Wildfire Risk: Officials

Fire crews plan to burn 36 acres in the eastern San Gabriel Valley this week as part of a long-term vegetation management effort.

DIAMOND BAR, CA — The Los Angeles County Fire Department, with support from Cal Fire and the Orange County Fire Authority, will conduct a prescribed burn in Tonner Canyon Thursday and Friday to reduce wildfire risk and improve ecosystem health, officials said.

The undeveloped 5,700-acre canyon curves in a crescent shape, stretching south from the Pomona (60) Freeway near Diamond Bar in Los Angeles County to the Orange (57) Freeway near Brea in Orange County.

The prescribed burn is part of an advanced vegetation management operation in the canyon that began last month and is set to run through October 2026.

As part of the effort, officials have identified a 350-acre area as high-risk and strategically important, according to the LACFD.

"Firefighter and camp crews will utilize hand-ignition techniques along with broadcast and pile burning to carefully burn approximately 36 acres located northwest of Tonner Canyon Motorway, below Diamond Ridge Estates and the County Estates in the city of Diamond Bar," the department said.

"A small test burn will be conducted beforehand to confirm optimal conditions before proceeding with the full burn."

Before the prescribed burn operations, firefighters will conduct a briefing each day at 8 a.m., including ignition times and weather conditions.

The burns are expected to be completed around 4 p.m. daily and will only be conducted under favorable conditions to ensure public safety and effectiveness, LACFD officials said.

"Diamond Bar, Brea, Yorba Linda, Chino, and other nearby residents may notice smoke in the area," the department said.

LACFD officials will work closely with the South Coast Air Quality Management District to monitor and address any air quality concerns.
