SCE Outage: Thousands Without Power In Record Heat In Long Beach

More than 5,300 Southern California Edison customers in Long Beach were left without power on the hottest day of the year Saturday.

LONG BEACH, CA — As the region baked in the hottest weekend of the year, more than 5,300 Southern California Edison customers were left without power four hours in Long Beach Saturday.

The power outage was caused by an equipment problem, and crews were working to repair the issue, according to Southern California Edison. The outage affected residents and businesses in the East Long Beach area.

The outage was first reported at about 9:10 a.m. in an area that included Bellflower Boulevard and Wardlow Road. Repair work was expected to take most of the day, and service would likely be restored to most customers by 5:30 p.m., Southern California Edison estimated.

The power outage came as temperatures became dangerously high for sick or elderly residents. Shortly after 3 p.m., the temperatures reached a scorching 91 degrees in the Long Beach area as heat records across Los Angeles County fell.
