📰 Here are the top stories today in Los Angeles:
- Officers of the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) shot and killed a woman in her 40s, who reportedly pointed a gun at passersby. They arrived in the area of Silver Lake Boulevard and Temple Street on Wednesday right around 8 p.m. They saw the woman; she allegedly pointed the gun at the officers, and they opened fire. The gun they found was a “carbon dioxide-powered BB and pellet gun.” (KTLA)
- Another day, another hiker rescue. On Tuesday, just after 9 p.m., the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) met up with a 19-year-old woman near 13482 West Trego Place. LAFD Air Operations hoisted her to a location where she could be transferred to an ambulance. Though she didn’t have any visible injuries, she “was unable to safely descend the terrain.” (LAFD)
- The East L.A. Coalition and the Whittier Boulevard Merchants Association oppose cruising. They thought they had a supporter in County Supervisor Hilda Solis. However, we learned on Thursday that Solis changed her mind and now supports state legislation that would “prevent local governments from banning cruising.” Critics say that cruising can result in “dangerous stunts, unruly spectators and loss of business.” Solis explains that “existing regulations are difficult and expensive to enforce,” and it would make more sense for the local police departments to build relationships with car clubs and promote safe cruising events. - Los Angeles County is under a blizzard warning this weekend. For those keeping track, that’s the first time since 1989 that L.A., blizzard and warning are mentioned in the same sentence. It’s interesting to note that the snow is secondary to a blizzard warning; the weather conditions that accompany it are at the forefront of the concern. They include winds “of 35 mph or greater” and snow that reduces visibility. And, before you roll your eyes, weather watchers saw “a dusting of snow on homes and vehicles just below the famous Hollywood Sign, located at 1,578 feet in elevation” early on Thursday. (NBC, KTLA)
- New York City has Atla, an upscale restaurant with a neighborhood Mexican vibe. In spring, we’re getting one, too. The eatery will take over the space that used to house the Adrift Burger Bar at 1025 Abbot Kinney Boulevard. You’ll get what they serve in New York, but it’ll also have a California touch. Expect its opening sometime this spring. (Eater L.A.)
