Soulja Boy Arrested During LA Traffic Stop: Police

The rapper was booked into city jail, according to inmate records.

LOS ANGELES — Soulja Boy was arrested early Sunday morning along the Melrose Avenue corridor in Los Angeles, according to police.

The rapper, whose legal name is DeAndre Cortez Way, was a passenger in a vehicle that was stopped by law enforcement shortly after 2:30 a.m. at Melrose and Genesee avenues, according to Los Angeles police. Way was arrested on suspicion of possessing a gun as a convicted felon, police said.

The 35-year-old was booked into city jail, according to inmate records.

Way has had numerous weapons-related arrests and two convictions over the years. He was also recently ordered by a Santa Monica civil jury to pay a former personal assistant $4 million after she claimed he sexually abused her and did not pay her overtime while also committing other wage and hour violations.

The Chicago hip-hop artist is best known for his 2007 single "Crank That (Soulja Boy)," which went to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and brought him a Grammy nomination for best rap song.
