⏰ Daylight Saving Time Poll! 🤔
Daylight saving time begins on March 12. According to history, we can thank entomologist George Hudson for coming up with the idea in 1895. Implementation took place in 1918 to save resources and extend the work day during wartime. In 1966, daylight saving time became the law of the land, but states could opt out. So far, only Hawaii and Arizona have done so. Now, dueling studies point to the successes and failures of the practice. Where do you stand on the issue? So far, 64% don’t like daylight saving time, while 35.1% do. Only 0.9% don’t care one way or the other.
📰 Here are the top stories in Los Angeles today:
- Arnold Schwarzenegger, the former California governor, struck a bicyclist with his SUV Sunday morning. He drove along San Vicente Boulevard and Burlingame Avenue, when the cyclist reportedly turned in front of the vehicle. Everyone stayed on the scene, and the cyclist was eventually taken to a hospital “with visible injuries.” Schwarzenegger took the cyclist’s bike to a repair shop after the police dismissed the scene. (Patch)
- If you parked your car on Sardis Avenue between Bentley Avenue and Sepulveda Boulevard, your vehicle might be one of the three smashed by an uprooted tree Monday in the early morning. It came down around 1:30 a.m. and dragged utility wires with it. Weather forecasters tried to keep residents hopeful by pointing out that the winds “are going to change direction.” (NBC)
- We’re number 5, but we might just claim the #1 spot! We’re talking about the rankings for the best football cities for fans. L.A. is fifth on the list and first in the state. Evaluators checked out 249 cities and employed 21 metrics that include average NFL game ticket prices and fan attendance at games. Monday’s list places Pittsburgh in first place overall and Valparaiso, Indiana in last. At the bottom of the list for California cities is San Luis Obispo in 196th place. (Wallet Hub)
- Back in 2022, United Airlines got attention when it said it would add a route from LAX to Tokyo Haneda that would run concurrently with its route to Tokyo Narita. The Haneda route will start in a little over a month, but now the Narita route out of LAX got scrapped. “Anecdotal evidence suggests tourism and foreign business travel has not rebounded to Japan nearly as much as originally anticipated.” (Live and Let’s Fly)
- And . . . the Los Angeles Police Department’s Vice unit busted Cobras & Matadors at 7615 Beverly Boulevard “for allowing some of the coolest, most chill diners in Los Angeles to BYOB last Thursday.” The restaurant took to social media and pointed to the homeless encampments and “illegal head shops” that the PD “continues to endure.” Instagram followers, on a post that has since been removed, were quick to support the venue, but some also questioned why the restaurant charged a corkage fee when it doesn’t have an ABC license. Others wanted to know what the restaurant wanted the PD to do with the homeless. (L.A. Eater)
