📰 Here are the top stories in Los Angeles today:
1) The fire department responded to a blaze at a vacant building at 1308 South Soto Street on Tuesday. The empty building, which used to be a bank, sent copious smoke into the air. Two firefighters were hurt while putting out the blaze. (Los Angeles Fire Department)
2) We learned on Tuesday that La Veranda, the mixed-use affordable housing complex at Soto Street and Cesar E. Chavez Avenue, is at the construction halfway point. In addition, the developers propose a similar building, named Chavez Gardens, for the neighboring parcel at 2518-2536 E Cesar E Chavez Avenue. That structure will offer “110 apartments above 3,000 square feet of ground-floor commercial space and parking for 44 vehicles.” If approved, the groundbreaking would be in 2023, and Chavez Gardens could open by 2025. (LA Urbanize)
3) Another rapper was killed in L.A. A 32-year-old man using the stage name Half Ounce was shot on Monday in Koreatown. Officers responded to the 700 block of South New Hampshire Avenue and found the “victim in front of an apartment building, unresponsive, with gunshot wounds.” (Yahoo! News, LAPD)
4) Are you ready for a Syrian food experience like no other? Nawal is a pop-up that serves food out of the operator’s backyard. Head to 838 Solano Avenue, and look for the wood fence with the opening cut into it. You get to choose from five line items on the menu. The pop-up operates on Saturdays and Sundays from noon until 4 p.m. – or until the food is sold out. (Eater LA)
5) Mark your calendars! The Vegan Street Fair is coming back this Saturday and Sunday! Head over to 11430 Chandler Boulevard between 3 p.m. and 10 p.m. on either day. “All food vendors have at least one $4 or less item.” (EventBrite)
