LOS ANGELES, CA — A mob of youths on bicycles brutally beat a man in the middle of the street in broad daylight, and Los Angeles Police are asking for help identifying the attackers Monday.

The violent attack took place at around 5 p.m. Saturday in the Carthay near the intersection of San Vicente Boulevard and Carrillo Drive, and bystanders captured it on video. The attack started with an argument between a driver and the youths on their bikes, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

"Officers met with witnesses, who initially observed the victim get into an argument with the suspects, who consisted of a group of 20-30 bicyclists, ages ranging between 16 to 18 years. After a couple of suspects struck and kicked the victim’s vehicle, the victim exited his vehicle to confront them. A physical altercation ensued, which resulted in additional suspects joining the altercation. The suspects immediately overwhelmed the victim, punching and kicking the victim, even after he had been pushed and pulled down to the ground. When witnesses approached to intervene, the suspects left the area together, riding their bicycles southbound on Carrillo Drive."

Video from the scene showed the attack was swift and brutal. It lasted just seconds. About a dozen of the youths are seen kicking the victim in the head or stomping directly on top of him as he tries to protect his head with his arms. As quickly as the attack began, it ended with the man lying in the middle of the road barely moving.

Los Angeles Fire Department Paramedics treated the victim at the scene. He sustained visible injuries but declined transportation to a hospital.

A bystander who obtained the video from his Uber driver posted it to Instagram Saturday. It included images of the driver's car, which appeared to show damage to it's rear tail light.

"Was in a Lyft coming home today when we saw a guy get jumped by a group of teenagers on bicycles. Fortunately my driver was ex military so we jumped out of the car and started running to help," he wrote. "We could have easily been jumped ourselves. Fortunately the thugs got back on their bikes after leaving the victim with head trauma and multiple lacerations to the face... The victim could have died if his injuries were more severe. The level of trauma he and his family are now going through is heartbreaking. I will say I am grateful for the 6 people who stayed to help which included a Navy nurse who stayed with the victim."

City Councilwoman Katy Yaroslavsky condemned the attack after the video was widely circulated Monday.

"My heart goes out to the young man who was assaulted and his family, and I'm relieved to hear that he is recovering. LAPD is actively investigating this incident, and while law enforcement has not indicated they think this was a hate crime, any act of violence like this is unacceptable. I urge anyone with information to come forward to help hold those responsible accountable," she said in a post on Instagram. "I know that this incident has shaken many in our community, and I want to assure you that we take these concerns very seriously. Violence has no place in our city, and those responsible must be held accountable."

Anyone with information about the attack is urged to contact Wilshire Area Detective Carlos at 213-922-8229. Tipsters who prefer to remain anonymous can call Crime Stoppers at 800-222-8477 or visit lacrimestoppers.org.

The incident is not the first time a mob of bikers overwhelmed a driver during an argument. Last year a mini-bike mob beat actor Ian Ziering in front of his child during a confrontation in Hollywood. The "Beverly Hills, 90210" alum called on Los Angeles officials to crack down on "lawlessness" and "hooliganism" after the attack.

"The incident has left me deeply concerned about the growing boldness of such groups who disrupt public safety and peace," Ziering said at the time. "This situation highlights a larger issue of hooliganism on our streets and the need for effective law enforcement responses to such behavior," he wrote. "As a citizen and a parent, I find it unacceptable that groups can freely engage in this kind of behavior, causing fear and chaos, while the response from authorities seems insufficient."
