Wrong-Way Driver Killed In 405 Crash That Jammed Traffic Across Valley

A man in his 30s was killed in head-on crash in the Sepulveda Pass, backing up traffic on the 405, 101 and Victory and Ventura bouelvards.

SHERMAN OAKS, CA — A wrong-way driver was killed after slamming head-on into another vehicle on the San Diego (405) Freeway in Sherman Oaks Tuesday. The crash injured two other people and tied up the freeway for hours.

The crash occurred just after 4 a.m. on the southbound 405 Freeway near the Valley Vista Boulevard, according to the California Highway Patrol. The CHP issued a SigAlert that lasted until 10 a.m.

The wrong-way driver was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the CHP. He was not immediately identified, with officials saying only it was a man believed to be in his 30s. The driver of the vehicle he struck was taken to Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center with critical injuries, including multiple broken bones, but he was alert and talking to officers and paramedics, according to the CHP.

One other person was evaluated at the scene but declined further medical treatment, according to Mark McLean of the Los Angeles Fire Department.

The crash led to another pileup nearby at Valley Vista Boulevard.

The lane closures backed up traffic for miles around in the Sepulveda Pass and alternate routes including the Venture (101) Freeway and Ventura and Victory boulevards
