605 Freeway SigAlert: Car Fire Backs Up Two Freeways

A vehicle became fully engulfed in flames near the San Gabriel and San Diego freeway transitions.

LOS ALAMITOS, CA — An SUV caught fire and became fully engulfed in flames on the northbound San Gabriel (605) Freeway in Los Alamitos, triggering a rush-hour SigAlert.

The fire backed up traffic on the 605 and San Diego (405) freeways in Long Beach and Seal Beach Monday afternoon. The incident occurred between the Katella offramp and the 405 Freeway transition just before 5:30 p.m., according to the California Highway Patrol. The number 5 lane was expected to remain closed for almost an hour as crews put out the blaze.

A black plume of smoke billowing from the fire could be seen for miles.
