Officials Urge Cooking Fire Prevention
Orange County Fire Authority officials say firefighters respond to a cooking fire once every three days in Orange County.
In preparation of Fire Prevention Week which begins on Oct. 6, the Orange County Fire Authority is urging residents to take precautions against cooking fires.
At the Monday night Seal Beach City Council meeting, OCFA Battalion Chief Robert Acosta gave a brief presentation about Fire Prevention Week and the need to be safe while cooking. According to Acosta, nationwide 40 percent of all fires in homes are cooking fires and locally the OCFA responds to a cooking fire once every three days in Orange County.
"We really want to get a hold of this cooking fire issue," Acosta said. "And there are some things residents can do to be cautious in the kitchen."

Cooking Safety Tips
- Never use water on a grease fire
- Turn the handles of pots and pans inward to keep them from being pulled or knocked off the stove
- Keep household items away from the stove
- Stay in the kitchen while you are frying, broiling or grilling food
- If you must leave the kitchen, turn the stove off
- Keep cooking surfaces clean and free of grease and oil spills
