Hopkinson Huskies Collect $4,051.30 in Change to Support Education
Hopkinson Elementary students collected change to support science, art and math programs in honor of retired music teacher Coralie Prince.
Hopkinson Elementary students participated in CHANGE WARS during the week of January 19th to help crown retired music teacher, Coralie Prince, the next Los Alamitos Education Foundation (LAEF) Queen of Hearts.
In a competition sponsored by the Husky Leadership Council, all classrooms at Hopkinson collected change during a weeklong competition to see which two classrooms could bring in the most money to support their former music teacher in her run at the LAEF crown. Mrs. Prince is currently campaigning to be crowned Queen of Hearts at LAEF’s annual gala on February 20, 2015. Every dollar donated to LAEF in a candidate’s name counts as one vote. When Hopkinson students learned that their beloved music teacher was running, they pulled together to support her run at the crown by organizing CHANGE WARS. After four days of donations the leadership council was amazed that their school had collected $4,051.30 in change to be donated to LAEF on behalf of Mrs. Prince’s campaign.
The winning classrooms brought in over $420 each. Leadership students counted every penny donated and principal Ondrea Reed spent two hours at a local bank verifying the large change donation. All proceeds from LAEF”s annual campaign are going to be used to bring S.T.E.A.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) fairs to Los Al USD school campuses.
