OC Coronavirus: Positives Cases Pass 8,000; Deaths Reach 210

On Friday, 167​ additional residents tested positive for the new coronavirus, and eight more deaths were reported.

ORANGE COUNTY, CA — Eight more Orange County residents died as a result of COVID-19 infections as of Friday, the Orange County Health Care Agency reported.

A total of 210 residents have died since the coronavirus pandemic began.

On Friday, 167 additional residents tested positive for the virus, raising the total number of infected to 8,153.

A total of 291 Orange County residents are currently hospitalized, down three from Thursday, while the number of those in intensive care dropped by three to 139.

The number of people tested for the virus in the county stands at 174,298 with 3,866 documented recoveries.

The rising death toll hits as the health care agency has been roiled by defections from its executive staff.

According to OC Health Care, the "Other" category includes the aggregate case count of the unincorporated areas of the county that have less than 5 cases, plus cases incarcerated in Orange County jails.

"Orange County Health Care Agency conducted a 'whole house testing' of all residents and staff of the Seal Beach Rehabilitation Center following an outbreak at that facility.

As of Wednesday, Seal Beach Health and Rehabilitation Center reported a total of 63 residents and 40 health care workers with positive cases, and two residents died as a result of the virus.

Following Dr. Nichole Quick's resignation from Orange County Health Care, Dr. Clayton Chau, the HCA's director, was named the county's chief health officer.

Within days, Chau reversed Dr. Quick's mask order, Thursday, suggesting that masks are recommended, but not mandatory as of Friday morning at 12:01 a.m.
