The Los Altos-Mountain View branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) and the League of Women Voters is encouraging women to get involved in their community and run for public office.
Political consultant Mary Hughes will present two political initiatives that promote women to attain positions of leadership.
Hughes will speak about the "2012 Project," an initiative to support women in running for Congress and local legislature, sponsored by the Center for American Women and Politics at Rutgers University. The event is also a forum for the AAUW's "Elect Her!" project, a similar campaign that focuses on advising college women how to run for campus office and beyond.

Hughes, president of the consulting firm Hughes & Co., is a long-time campaign advisor and director for politicians. They include former House of Representatives speaker Nancy Pelosi and former San Jose Mayor Ron Gonzalez.
