Update: Residents Ordered to Shelter in Place if They Smell Smoke

Residents in southern San Mateo County and northern Santa Clara County who can smell or see smoke should shelter in place. A metal recycling plant in Redwood City is on fire.

A fire at a metal recycling facility in Redwood City is expected to burn most of the night. It continues to pour out smoke, along with steam from firefighting efforts.

A Shelter in Place order remains in effect for the safety of residents.

A fire at a metal recycling facility near the Port of Redwood City that is sending up a large plume of black smoke continues to burn this evening, according to fire officials.
           
Residents in southern San Mateo County and northern Santa Clara County who can smell or see smoke should stay indoors, close their windows and turn off any systems that circulate outside air, emergency officials said.
           
The smoke is blowing in a southwesterly direction, according to Palo Alto fire officials.
           
The fire was reported at about 1:20 p.m. at Sims Metal Management, located in the 600 block of Seaport Road, a San Mateo County fire dispatcher said.
           
The fire was burning in an outdoor pile of scrap recyclables, the dispatcher said.
           
The fire is also sending smoke drifting over U.S. Highway 101, according to the CHP.
