Coronavirus: San Jose Firefighter Tests For COVID-19
Dozens of others in the department could be affected too, officials said
SAN JOSE, CA — At least one firefighter in San Jose has been confirmed infected with the novel coronavirus, with dozens of others possibly affected, city officials said Thursday.
City Manager Dave Sykes told reporters at a news conference Thursday morning at the Mineta San Jose International Airport that one firefighter was confirmed infected with the virus, which is also known as COVID-19, and a second is being tested for infection.
It is unclear how the firefighter contracted the coronavirus disease.

At least 50 other firefighters are on leave due to the infection, Sykes said.
Assistant Fire Chief Reggie Williams said the test results for a second firefighter had been received by the department, but had not been released yet.

"Frankly, we need test kits more than words," Mayor Sam Liccardo said.
"Until we have the testing, we're flying blind. We need the testing capacity."
