Highway 17 Mostly Reopens After Storm Prompts Closure

Santa Cruz County officials earlier Friday asked residents to cancel all travel plans except in cases of emergency because of the storm.

SANTA CRUZ COUNTY, CA — State Highway 17 between Santa Cruz and Santa Clara counties is mostly reopen Friday afternoon after a lengthy closure caused by trees that fell down amid windy and wintry weather in the area, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The CHP said Friday morning that northbound Highway 17 was blocked at Granite Creek Road and southbound Highway 17 was blocked at Bear Creek Road due to trees that fell overnight.

As of about 3 p.m., all northbound lanes of the highway had reopened, while all southbound lanes reopened south of Summit Road, Only one southbound lane north of Summit Road had reopened, according to the CHP.

The county's Emergency Operations Center has been activated to monitor the storm activity and coordinate the response by public agencies.
